What is MFL?
MFL stands for Modern Foreign Languages. Any language that is currently spoken around the world, such as Spanish or French, is classed as a Modern Foreign Language. Modern Foreign Languages are distinct from classical languages, such as Latin or Ancient Greek, which are no longer spoken today.
What class is MFL?
Modern foreign languages (MFL) is studied by all students in year 7 to 9. French is taught in year 7, 8 and 9 and Spanish is taught in year 8 and 9. Students can choose to study a language further in year 10 and 11, as one or two of their GCSE option choices.
When did MFL become compulsory in KS2?
Significant progress was made after MFL in KS4 became compulsory in 1996. By 2000 around 90% of pupils were taking an MFL and 79% were entered for GCSE.
